Having worked in radio, advertising, public relations, and as a newspaper columnist, Doug Gamble is best known as a writer of humor and speech material for President Ronald Reagan—including some of Reagan’s most memorable lines in the 1984 re-election campaign—and President George H.W. Bush.
Doug was among those who helped "The Great Communicator" communicate, writing for President Reagan from February, 1984 until the end of his second term. He wrote for George Bush throughout his 1988 presidential campaign and his presidency. Doug has since continued writing humor, "soundbites," and speech material for some of America's most prominent figures in the fields of politics, entertainment and business.
Political candidates and officeholders at virtually every level of government, as well as CEOs of Fortune 500 corporations, count on his sharp wit and highly effective use of humor to help them create winning speeches and persuasive presentations.
As the GuruMaker expert in crafting powerful, memorable content laced with highly effective and relevant humor, Doug describes his work this way:
"A lot of what I do is in conjunction with political or corporate speech writers, where I'll work from a draft and add humor, not just at the beginning to get the speaker off to a good start, but throughout the body of the speech to reinforce certain points in an entertaining way. I'll also add so-called sound bite lines that serve to help the speaker communicate various points and ideas in a creative manner that the audience finds memorable. This 'speech doctoring' usually makes a good speech even better and adds elements of impact that would otherwise be missing.
"In a political campaign, and/or while a politician is in office, I provide a steady stream of humor and sound bites for use in speeches, debates, news conferences, media interviews, or however the material will best help the person advance his or her cause. This includes self-deprecating humor, lines that jab at an opponent, lines that help 'sell' a position on the issues, and material that is tailored to a specific audience, location or event.
Training and consulting specialties: speech writing, political campaign speeches;, senior-level business presentations, roast writing, humorous one-liners and witticisms for media appearances, sound bite writing.
President Ronald Reagan described Larry Tracy as “an extraordinarily effective speaker.” Larry earned that praise for his success at speaking on controversial policy issues to some of the toughest audiences in the country.
Larry, a former army colonel, originally managed and trained the Pentagon’s top briefing team, the Defense Intelligence Agency’s Presentation Division. He was responsible for daily strategic intelligence briefings to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of Defense, Congressional staffs, and other Washington decision-makers.
Larry's speaking skills were noticed. The State Department snapped him up to deliver several hundred presentations across the country on contentious foreign policy issues. Most of Larry's public appearances took the form of debates in front of demanding, often hostile, audiences. The White House and the State Department invariably handed the most difficult speaking assignments to Larry. His superior described him as “the State Department’s most sought-after and articulate spokesman.”
Larry has a rare skill. He can train speakers and presenters to convert an audience that has already made up its mind. He is the embodiment of the GuruMaker philosophy and a cornerstone of the team. Larry is fluent in Spanish and has been a frequent guest on Spanish-language news and TV channels.
